GRAPHITE
Subtle and elegant, graphite beautifully captures a subject with grace and precision. It works best on a plain white background, allowing the subject to stand out. Graphite's reflective quality makes a fully covered background less suitable. While graphite provides a good tonal range, it is softer and less contrasted than charcoal. However, this very subtlety is what lends it its distinctive elegance and artistic look.

CHARCOAL
This ancient medium has survived the times for all the best reasons: It's versatile, has a very impressive tonal range, offers a variety in textures and has a dramatic, contrastive quality that is nothing short of cinematic. Subjects done in charcoal look great on a plain white background, but the medium has the most impact and contrast when displayed on a dark background.
